Many families arrive feeling exhausted.
You may have tried consequences, conversations, monitoring, rewards, therapy, tutors, medication, taking things away, giving more freedom, giving less freedom, or simply trying not to make things worse.
Nothing seems to stick.
The more worried you become, the harder you try to help.
The harder you try to help, the more your child may resist.
Before long, everyone feels misunderstood.
Family work helps slow that cycle down.
Parent coaching is not about becoming a perfect parent. It is about understanding your child more clearly, recognizing the patterns developing in the family, and responding with greater intention.
My parent coaching work draws from attachment theory, nervous system regulation, child development, ADHD-informed parenting, family systems, and practical behavior change.
We may work on:
Sometimes the problem is no longer located in one person. The entire family may be organized around conflict, substance use, anxiety, crisis, avoidance, or attempts to keep one person stable.
Family counseling creates space to understand those patterns together.
Areas we may address include:
The goal is not to determine who is right or wrong. It is to understand what keeps happening between people and develop healthier ways of responding.
Parents often have very reasonable questions:
How worried should I be? Is this experimentation or something more serious? Am I enabling? Should I take the car away? Should I drug test? How much freedom should I give them? Why do consequences seem to make everything worse? How do I hold boundaries without destroying our relationship? When does someone need treatment?
There is rarely one simple answer. We look at the individual, the severity of the substance use, developmental stage, ADHD, executive functioning, emotional regulation, family relationships, previous interventions, and current level of risk.
From there, we create a more thoughtful response.
It is common for one parent to become more concerned while another believes the situation is being exaggerated. One parent may become stricter. The other may rescue. One may want treatment immediately. The other may want to wait.
These differences can unintentionally increase family instability. Parent coaching can help caregivers develop a more unified understanding of what is happening and create a response that is both compassionate and appropriately boundaried.
I also work with parents navigating unique attachment, developmental, and family system challenges.
This may include:
Families often benefit from support long before residential treatment or major intervention becomes necessary. If you are seeing concerning patterns and are unsure how to respond, we can begin there.
